In my life, I sometimes feel regretful about all the misspent money on the food that becomes too stale to eat in the freezer, electronics that are barely touched after a few days, or the books that are shelved after a few sittings. Yet, I never repent of the money that I spend on Chichi, an eight years old Chihuahua that has been accompanying me since his birth. I think every dog lover would agree with me given how these adorable creatures change our lives.

Understandably, some might complain about the hike in the cost of keeping pets. Canned food and services such as pets manicure or showering impose financial burdens, especially on young adults who are already struggling with their house installments or credit cards. Yet, just as parents are willing to spend a great portion of their earnings on the food, shelter, or education of their kids, it also makes sense to spend the same amount of money on pets that are increasingly treated as family members.

To be sure, pets are in reciprocal relationships with us. While we are responsible for their food and shelter, they pay us off with their cuteness, solace, and accompaniment, antidotes to the miseries and pains of the world that many of us typically operate in. A pet on the soft head of a housecat, a handshake with a border collie that jumps up and down with a big smile, and a hug with a golden retriever that has just fetched the slippers provide us with an escape from all the overworking hours or boring study sessions. In a world teeming with pressures, we find their outlets by staying with the pets that keep us mentally healthy and not stressed out. In light of the value of health, the claim that spending money on pets is not worthwhile simply does not hold water.

Besides, the assumption that we have better ways to spend money is dubious at best. People do need to spend money on many things: outings with friends, entertaining activities, consumer goods, and so on. Yet, it is misleading to prioritize our choices. Spending money on night clubs or video games, for example, does not necessarily stand higher on the hierarchy of expenditures than dog or cat food. It is largely a personal choice that one wants to spend money on a luxury bag, an old but rare album, or a toy for one’s pets. Thus, whether there are better ways to spend the money should be left to the discretion of individuals rather than prescribed rules. At least, for us dog lovers, it is rare that we can find “better” ways.

Given the valuable services that our pets provide and the ambiguous definition of better ways to spend money, I strongly disagree with the idea suggested by the prompt.
